The Ku’e Petition

The Ku’e Petition…

The result of such meetings, held throughout the islands by both women’s and men’s branches of the Hui Aloha Aina (Hawaiian Patriotic League), was the Great Petitions of some 21,000 signatures, which in 1997 found their way home to Hawaii nei with Dr. Noenoe Silva (a founding member of our club), who found them in the U.S. National Archives in Washington, DC.  Dr. Silva subsequently took the petitions to the neighbor islands to introduce those who signed them to their descendants.  In 2004, Dr. Silva published a book titled Aloha Betrayed about those tumultuous times during and immediately after the overthrow and about the resistance to of the people and the Queen to annexation.
